It’s getting close to fall here, and the weather is already changing. It’s actually still dark when I get up in the morning now, which is a pretty big change. It’s still light when I go to bed though, which is really neither here nor there, I suppose. In any case we have some changes and some events to let you in on here at LU Radio. The events page will be updated very soon to reflect all of the great things going on and you can expect our website schedule to change soon as well. So, schedule wise, here are the changes that we have for you!
Starting this week, there will be no more I Heart Airtime. Elsie was finding it harder and harder to do as demands on her time became greater and as she is off to Ottawa in a week, we will be bidding adieu to both her and the show. Starting next week in the Midnight to 2am timeslot on Thursday nights will be ‘So You Think You’re Punk Rock’ hosted by our own Andrew Edwards. This show moves from the 1-3am timeslot on Mondays, however, until we find a suitable replacement we will air rebroadcasts of the show on Mondays.
Also starting this week, we say farewell to The Lucid Translucency. Starting immediately The Modern Mix Tape moves to Friday nights Midnight to 1am and will be followed by the return of The Revolution Music Radio Show. Dr. Destructo will be returning with more great underground music than you can shake a stick at, 1-2am every Friday.
Very soon we will also be saying goodbye to Fast Forward. Kaitilyn is still going to be helping with the station but has decided to take a more ‘behind the scenes’ role for the next little while. Sara will be extending Outside The Rectangular Prism to 5-7pm and stay tuned to see what will happen with the hour between Betty Howls and OTRP!
On the Events front there is so much going on here it would make your head spin!
September 5th, Fabulous Portia will be hosting ‘Hot Pants Romance’ at Black Pirates Pub, an all lady DJ Dance party! Make sure to check it out!
September 17th Music for The Masses Returns with a one night, one price, three venue musical extravaganza taking place at Black Pirates Pub, Jacks and Crocks. It’s 19+ and $10 to get in to an incredible night of local music.
September 19th LU Radio will be resurrecting the Music Swap and Sale to hopefully make it an annual event. It takes place here at the station (707 Oliver Rd.) from 11am-5pm. Bring your money and peruse what other have for sale, perhaps bring some stuff of your own to try and swap OR if you would like to sell some of your own music, feel free to get in touch. Call Jason at 766-7260!
September 23rd LU Radio and The Argus will be teaming up for the First Annual Media Meet and Greet, taking place at the Study. Jean-Paul De Roover will headline the evening which will also feature DJ Fabulous Dave and DJ Luv. Come out and meet some LU Radio DJ’s, some Argus Scribes and learn how to get involved in the media of Lakehead University, and Thunder Bay’s Community!
More details on all of these events can be found on our events page, with more details coming soon!
That’s a big update, I’m going to go sleep it off!!
Another long time since updating! Sorry it’s been so long! As you may have seen there have been a few changes in the schedule over the last little while. I’ve missed letting you know about the return of Gloria Ranger to LU Radio and I apologize for that! Aboriginal Radio Hour: The Summer Edition is back on Tuesday mornings from 8-9am. We’re hoping for a return of Four Directions Radio this year but nothing is concrete yet. Also, Glory Ranger (interesting name similarity there) is now hosting the LU Radio Variety Hour on Monday’s from 1-2pm. It’s the best way to start off the first hour of the afternoon on Mondays! The show will feature interview clips with local celebrities and people of interest as well as great music. Think you should be interviewed or know someone who would make a great interviewee? Let Glory know! varietyhour[@]luradio.ca is the place to email your pitch!
We will be seeing the departure of Lucid Translucency in the upcoming weeks, which will leave our Friday nights a little less…out there…but never fear! The Modern Mixtape will move up to take over that slot and Dr. Destructo will be returning to the airwaves to take over the 1-2am slot on Fridays!
Thank you to everyone who came out to visit during Blues Fest and either donated or bought a shirt or even just came to chat and grab a button or sticker! We really enjoyed meeting you all and can’t wait for next year’s Blues Fest to do it all again!! Thanks to the TBCA for having us again this year as well! If you’re interested in chatting with some of us again soon, stop by The Superior Youth Fest happening Thursday July 29th at Marina park from 6-10pm. We’ll have a booth and some folks there to chat with you about LU Radio…and the event is free!
Also, in the ‘Upcoming Events’ category, we have 3 things slated for September outside of the normal Orientation stuff. September 17th will see the return of Music For the Masses. It will be a ‘one night, one price, 3 venue’ musical event. Sunday September 19th will be a music swap and sale here at LU Radio. We will be opening up tables for folks to come and bring the music they have for sale or for trade. For information on how to take part feel free to email manager[@]luradio.ca but more information will be coming soon. Also, on September 23rd, LU Radio and the Argus will be teaming up for our ‘First Annual Media Meet and Greet’ at The Study. The night will feature a performance by Jean-Paul De Roover and some dj stylings by Fabulous Dave. Stay tuned for more information on all of these events and more coming soon!!!
Thanks for tuning in!
Well, we’re back up and running! The booth has some new wiring, the station has a better electrical service and some new lighting so that we can see just what it is we’re doing! Thanks so much for sticking it out with us! We have some new equipment coming any day now as well which is also going to help operations here and perhaps help pave the way for some new shows as well!
Speaking of shows, I have some bad news to impart to all of you long time political activists out there. Unfortunately The Josh Kolic Experience has called it a day on LU Radio. At least for now. Josh feels that he hasn’t been able to give the show the attention it deserves lately so he has decided to step down. We’re definitely going to miss him around here and wish him all the best! Hopefully we’ll see him return in the fall!
Speaking of returning, Big D is returning to LU Radio! Tropical Storm makes its return Sunday June 27th at 5pm. Hockey Talk has finished for the season, and Big D is stepping into that slot to turn the ice into sunshine with Soca and Reggae to get you up and dancing at the dinner table! For those of you who are Andrew Edwards fans, keep an eye on the schedule for his return to a music format show. He’ll be bringing back punk rock to the late night crowd following Blowing Up The Lakehead soon. We’ll let you know when his new show starts!
By the way, this Sunday from 3-5pm EST, Stephen will have an interview with Nightwood who are playing town on Monday! Make sure to tune in and check it out!
I think that’s it for now, but I’m sure as soon as I post this something will change or we’ll have some new idea for you. Keep your eyes here and your ears on the radio for new information! Don’t forget to follow us on Twitter and become our fan on Facebook so that you can get the WHOLE experience!
