Where The Heck is LU Radio Located?
LU Radio, also known as CILU 102.7FM, is a non-profit, campus based community radio station. What this means is that the majority of our programming comes from students and community members right here in Thunder Bay. All programming is done on a volunteer basis, and the majority of tasks at the radio station are done by our volunteers as well.
The goal of LU Radio is to provide support for the community, training and work experience for volunteers and community accessible media for both the community of Thunder Bay and student body of Lakehead University. Our broadcasting reflects an attempt to provide the community of Thunder Bay and students of Lakehead University an alternative to programming already found on the CBC and commercial radio stations in Thunder Bay. We also do our best to support local arts, charitable organizations and other publicly beneficial events.

How Can I Do This?
Simply click on the ‘Advertise’ link in the menu bar and a form will open. Fill out and submit this form and it will be sent directly to our production department. We will create the PSA, contact you for final approval and run it as long as it is needed for.
I Am Promoting A Show At A Club/Someone’s House, How Can I Advertise This?
If you wish to have your show promoted on our What’s Up In Thunder Bay segment which airs 4 times a day, either have it posted on www.tbshows.com or www.baycore.net and we will have it added in appropriately. You may also send an email to whatsupinthunderbay@gmail.com which will get it to us much quicker. Please note that we do record the What’s Up In Thunder Bay segments in advance, so the more lead time you give us, the better.
If you wish to have an advertisement created separate from What’s Up In Thunder Bay, this can be done as well. The cost for this advertisement is $25 and our logo placed on your poster/hand bills. The $25 cost covers the scripting and creation of the advertisement as well as at least 100 ad spots. As this is a very large discount from our regular advertising rates, we ask that our logo is placed on your posters and hand bills and that you do actually ‘flyer’ for your show. If you make extras for us, we will be happy to distribute your hand bills during LU Radio events and have your posters on display at the station and our events. For further information and to request an advertisement, email manager@luradio.ca and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
Does LU Radio Have Advertisements?
Although we are not allowed to advertise as much as a commercial station, we do run advertising here at the station. For ad rates, sponsorship information or general advertising questions, feel free to contact the station manager by email at: manager@luradio.ca or by phone at 807-766-7260.
Do You Need Help With The Station?
Definitely! As a community and campus station we run on volunteer power and we can always use help. Whether it’s helping to file incoming CD’s, repair computers or even clean the bathroom, we can use the help. All you need to do is fill out the volunteer form which appears when you click the ‘Volunteer’ button on the menu bar. Once you have submitted the application it will go to the station manager who will, in turn, respond to you as quickly as possible. Please be patient though, as we do have quite a few requests come in! You can also stop by 707 Oliver Rd. During business hours for a chat/tour but it’s always good to call first: 807-343-8881 is the office number. Business hours are Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm.
I Love LU Radio But Don’t Have Time To Volunteer. Does The Station Accept Donations?
Yes we do. We welcome donations be they big or small. The easiest way to donate is to click on the ‘Donate’ link of the menu bar. This will allow you to donate by Pay Pal to the station. You don’t need to have a Pay Pal account in order to donate. You may also send your donations by mail. If you are sending a cheque or money order, please make it payable to LU Campus Radio Inc. If you are in the area, you can also stop by the station during business hours, or call to arrange a time when someone can meet you. Our business hours are Monday to Friday 10am-4pm but we can usually arrange time outside of that if you call us at 807-343-8881.
How Can I Get My Own Radio Show?
You need to begin by volunteering at the station. We require all of our programmers to complete 10 hours of volunteer service with the station before they can be considered for a programmer position. This work may include cleaning the station, cataloguing or filing CD’s or even helping out at an event. Essentially, it’s our way of helping you to become more familiar with the station, and us to become more familiar with you. Once your volunteer hours have been completed, the station manager will speak to you about your ideas for a show and speak to you about availability. We are as accommodating as possible, but everyone wants ‘prime time’ hours and the programmers currently holding those spots may well have been around for quite awhile.
What Types of Radio Shows Do You Need?
All types! LU Radio must meet certain programming criteria in order to maintain its licence through the CRTC. The main gist of the criteria is variety. We must provide different programming than what is currently heard on the airwaves in Thunder Bay which is why you rarely hear ‘classic rock’ or ‘Top 40′ music on the station. We also must maintain a certain amount of diversity within the station so that we aren’t Thunder Bay’s ‘Metal Music’, ‘Indie Rock’ or ‘Politics Talk’ only station. If you have an idea for a show, talk to us about it. Send an email to the station manager, fill out a volunteer form. We’re willing to work with you to help you format your show, but keep in mind that we do have guidelines.
How do I submit my band to LU Radio for airplay?
Send an email to our music director at: musicdirector@luradio.ca for starters, so that we can be on the lookout for it. If your music falls into a specific ‘genre’ then check the contacts page for the assistant music director looking after that genre and send an email there as well. If you have a show in mind that your music would suit particularly well, please indicate that in your correspondence as it will save some time making sure the right people hear it! Music can be sent by mail to:

Or you can always drop by the station during business hours. Our physical address is:

Where the Heck is LU Radio Located?
Even though our mailing address is 955, the station is located at 707 Oliver Rd. We are on the edge of Lakehead University’s campus, closest to the Bora Laskin Building, directly across from the Riverside Cemetery. We’re the third house west of Balmoral Ave. on the south side of the street, and yes, we’re a little white house.
